Sounds like you are planning on walking in to apply- which means you are probably looking at retail. Regardless of the type of job- you want to be prepared as if they will interview you on the spot.

1) What to wear:

Since you're going door-to-door you need comfortable shoes

You need to look professional, a suit if you have one. If not then a dress/skirt and cardigan

If you have any piercings, remove them all except 1 earring per ear in the lobe and not in the cartiledge, etc.

Again- your hopes is to have them interview you right on the spot if they have a need.

2) Arm yourself- Be prepared!

Make sure you have dates, addresses, phone numbers, manager's names and numbers to complete an application. In today's market- you need to fill it out on the spot and give it right back to them- so make sure you have all your past job information ready to go.

If you have a resume- make sure you have plenty of copies to hand in with all the applications you may fill out

3) How do I know if they're hiring?

If there aren't any obvious signs, or local ad job postings, etc. then go to the customer service desk. It is always appropriate to introduce yourself and tell them you are interested in applying for a position. I.e. Hi I'm Rhonda and I am interested in applying for a position here, do you know if you're currently hiring?'; If they aren't sure- be confident enough to ask if they will call a supervisor to assist you. If they are hiring, ';Great, can you tell me the application process? Is it okay if I fill out an application now?'; Etc. If they are not hiring, don't be afraid to ask if they might be in the future and when that might be- ';Oh that's too bad, can you tell me if you might have needs in the next month or when a better time might be to check back?'; Don't be afraid to leave a resume if you have one even if they aren't hiring tomorrow- and don't be afraid to ask for a business card to follow up. Most managers have them regardless of the type of industry their in.

Make sure you have plenty of pens and a clipboard if you have one- makes it so much easier to fill out an application rather than using your lap.

Best of luck to you!
